I’ve often found myself wondering — what are some good ideas to write a song about?

It can feel crippling when you don’t have another song coming through the pipeline.

After struggling for years to find the right words and songs to write about, I decided to just start spilling my soul. Writing about anything. Life. Love. Loss. Fears.

The more I let my heart do the writing, the better the songs become — and the more access to creativity I find.

Need good ideas to write a song about?

To help you along in the process, I’ve decided to share many song ideas, phrases, lyrics, and more that I haven’t yet turned into a song. I’ve been writing songs for much of my life, so I have many. One day I may use the bits and pieces as full songs, but for now, I shall share, as I know it will give birth to more.

I hope my words give you inspiration.

1. You’re A Princess

It’s a Friday night, the lights turned low,
Fireplace roaring, while we watch the gentle snow.

Long blond hair comes running in, she’s not an inch over three feet tall,
My second born and filled with love, she’s got a book and a bouncy ball.

Hands the book to me, I start reading freely
We get to the part with a Prince,
who saves the day without a hitch.

About this time she looks to me, and say,

Daddy, am I a princess?

I promise you, with all energy of heart,
I fell in love with those big blue eyes, I loved you from the start.

I say to you, like I’ve said everyday.
Little girl, you are a Princess.

You are my princess. Little one.
You’re a princess.

2. Snow Cone

When you look at a snow cone and lick your lips,
that’s the feeling I want forever, it’s this.

3. Mist In The Morning

You’re like the mist in the morning
Wake me up when I feel down.

Send me up to your cloud,
Where the its up higher than birds can fly

4. Animal

Destroying life, trashing faith,
I feel like an animal

Get to close and I will bite,
Laser sight ready to fight

Pressure rising in my veins,
Too much effort just to stay sane

Runnin faster, louder longer
Letting rise to the building anger

Let me go as I derail
I feel like an animal

5. Don’t Know

The warmth of your touch or kiss so simple,
I feel the need to live life passionately.
From head to toe a tingling inside,
your smiling face I can hardly breathe.

I try and plan to be a better man,
A table for one? No, I’ll take one for two.
Don’t know what the future holds,
but I hope the future holds you.
Don’t know what the future holds,
but I hope the future holds you.

Among exotic lands and islands,
could there be a better place?
I think I’ll look no further,
for safety lies in his warm embrace.

Walk through the door and say nothing more,
a glass of wine, canvas, I paint.
He had me there, right then and there,
the feeling brought me close to faint.

I may grow, I may cry,
and someday I’ll die,
but I may live that someday with you.
Don’t know what the future holds,
but I hope the future holds you.
Don’t know what the future holds,
but I hope the future holds you.

6. Pieces Of You

I find pieces of you in every song

7. Free With You

And I’m free when I’m fallin’

When I’m fallin’ into your arms

I could stay right here forever more

Wrapped up in your love, could I ask for more

8. Flowers and Bees

I slept in the flowers for just a few hours, to pass by the town and its grief. And when I awoke, rubbing sleep my eyebrows I saw him standing by the creek. Delighting for days in many many ways, for never to know where to be. Just my man, hand in hand, buzzing like flowers and bees.

9. Drowning In Your Love

If the world was floodin’ would I know,
Probably not, I’m already drowning in your love.

One foot forward and two steps back,
I think you gave me a heart attack.

How much longer will I have no air,
Who knows, I keep breathin’ when I touch your hair.

The world wants to know how I can move so slow,
No idea, but can I take you to a picture show?

10. Head On Your Shoulders

My head on your shoulders,
the world may fall apart,
draw me in closer,
my world with you it starts.

I’m afraid of the darkness I feel all around,
what’s up, what’s left, what’s right, what’s down?

Take my world and lift it up,
I know you have that power,
drink with me this life, its cup?

Cry on your shoulder,
run with your heart,
with you I am running,
running far from the start.

11. Treadmill

Life is a treadmill
that never stops to be real
fast, fast, fast, run boy run
for you win some you loose some, and sometimes you gain none,
but in the end run again, you’re ought to have learned some.

12. If I could hide

if i could run, if I could hide
if I could get from this pain, then I would fly

even if you, looked at me
i would get up and go, time to leave

13. Love and Emotion

I’m in love with more than I can imagine. There’s more there than nothing emotional. I can’t believe it. In what we believe. There’s nothing in love with what I can see. More than I know what more than for me. What’s loves. A secondhand emotion.

Who needs a man when a heart can be broken. I see nothing more than mountains in the light more me. I see nothing more than a sun to see.

A same kinda man can never be deliverin’ but that’s kinda the way I feel in this same. I love. A secondhand emotion. A heart needs to be broken. I need love in what I have to do with it. A heart needs a man when a heart can be broken. I can feel that love is that type of place that you can love when the love can be broken and there is some kinda emotion that is in love with all the things that go around. I feel like all the love in my life can be broken by all the shame and love and doubt.

14. Take It Away

The pain is real,
what’s this I feel?

I’m burning within, is it a sin,
to feel the way I do?

What I had before time was beautiful then,
rolling and tossed, it’s over again.

Take it away, take it away, take it away,
release the pain, release the pain, release the pain.
It’s time to stand again.

It’s almost too late, it’s growing too late, is this my fate?
A broken path is where I’ve been and stay.

15. The Children of the Battlefield

The amber light of mid-morning sun,
the cold haze of mist, falling onto the coast.

Somber goodbyes, kisses and hugs
As the moorings cut loose, the ship must sail on

The destination, right in harms way
Silver bullets, usually run astray

There is fighting, cursing and running
They fight hard – and give it their all

But Sometimes, He claims one – because that’s how it is
Even though they, have families – with kids runnin’ round
Shrapnel gets heavy, gunshots run clean
Bombs bombard ditches – with hell-like screams

Units get tired – as their dirty, not clean
It’s almost like – this ordeal’s just a dream

Though tender, like a child – these soldiers work hard
But sometimes, He claims one – because he wants his children back
He wants to bring home – The Children of the Battlefield

Almost at random – dog tags are sent home
Flags and missing pieces – clothes that were worn

In an effort – they gave up their lives
Fighting for freedom – so we can all have light

At times we think – why did it happen?
did they make the right choice?

All in all – it wasn’t at random
because their Daddy called them Home

16. Your Voice Is My Song

Drowning in a sea of misery when you’re not around me.
Now that I have you – I feel like the skies are forever blue.

The summer sun sets early – different roads are pulling each way – but I know if I
hold you tight, everything will be okay.

I’ll hold you close – never let you slip away.
You and I will carry on make our love a special place.
Your voice is my song, your face is my day,
Everything you are – makes the world ok.

She makes me feel like I can fly and soar – her beauty, her love; I’ll forever adore.

I love you

17. Moon, Don’t Cry

Moon. Do not cry.

Let me sing a lullaby.

You look at the world with your weeping eyes, though shining bright tonight. You see the world, its people and scars- just remember, though human, we can be stars.

18. Morning Delight

I’m no longer a pilgrim a slave to this fall, fighting, charging, nothing in squall.

Don’t fight the beggar, just feel it inside – tonight is the night I live my life.

Come with me, following the leader-
2 2 Go. Come with me, following the
Leader 2 2 go.

When not inside this visible rust,
Emplore the kind the one of lust.

Searching all ways before it fight,
This is my sinful morning delight

19. Sometimes I Cry

Sometimes I cry.
I dig my head into my bed.
And ask myself why.

I dig a hole and no-one knows,
Why I cry.

Singing songs of love and bliss,
and Lullabies. Music I despise.

I’m swimming harder than I ever have, and still drowning. Still drowning.

I’m doing best to lift up my head,
And feel better inside. Better inside.

This love is a thing I have never known, it makes me scared, unprepared, looking for the strength I’ve never known.

20. Into The Night

I can hear the silence of night,
when you’re near I feel its closer.

Moving back, moving back I can hear your voice,
Filling my soul, into the night.

Do you feel me here now,
Do you feel me here
Let me arrive,
I want you to know,
that I’m on your side.

21. Old Piano Bench

Kimball engraved as the name of a master, crafted a piece that would spark joy and laughter.
Perched below lies the bench that I would seat.

Tickling away at ivory keys, making a song that would soon please.
Sitting upon a bench that would support my life.

Long hour played, snow and rain.
My first kiss with a girl as I sang,
A lot has happened on an old piano bench.

Where will I be when I turn gray?
The n setting like a summer day?

I’ll take a guess…and old piano bench.
Where was I my best? An old piano bench.

22. The Amber Light Of Moon

Shimmering off the wind-tossed seas, the moonlight danced like buzzing bees. In the distance – a one-manned boat came sailing. Sailing. Sailing.

Agape was a sailor, and he had been searching. For decades he had roamed the seas, catching tides as they pleased. For he was looking – for the greatest treasure of them all. For once as a boy, in the depths of night, his Father had said, “There’s one delight.” He described to Agape a treasure so great, it nearly could be man’s lasting fate. A treasure so beautiful, a treasure so vast – it had the ability to last and last.

So Agape searched, scanning the seas, a lofty nest – sitting perched.

Agape grew old – his search had come to an end. He knew that his death was surely around just one bend. He rocked and he rocked – wailed and wailed, knowing for naught – he had sailed and sailed.

For he realized that instead of silver and gold, the treasure of all was nothing to hold. The treasure he then found in his mind, was the love his Father shared – with his Mother – for all time.

I tell this tale with one intent, to show of my love for a girl I met. For she makes me whole, she makes me complete, I’ll forever be grateful for each time we meet. She makes me feel like I can fly and soar – her beauty, her love; I’ll forever adore. When I look into her glorious eyes, I see mysteries larger than life. When I glimpse her radiant face, I’m caught in a whirlwind – a warm embrace. For if birds can fly higher than the trees, my love will soar farther – crossing the seas. I’ll neigh be able to put words in measure – for the love that I have for my eternal treasure. My love, my heart.

23. Bodysong

Shattering glass,
a sound so distinct,
it’s piercing my eyes,
I’m trying not to blink.

Reflection is ugly,
I hate this somebody
I can change it with some money
Although I hate to be bloody
