MISO Japanese Cuisine & Restaurant in Sacramento off Broadway is a new sushi place we tried for Barrett’s 27th birthday.
In the few years we’ve lived here, we’ve tried a handful of different sushi restaurants in the Sacramento area, and MISO Japanese Cuisine now tops the list for mid-line sushi, especially on the takeout list. Places like Mikuni’s are more elevated regarding the atmosphere and overall delivery, but MISO might give a fair fight concerning the presentation and taste of rolls.

MISO Japanese Cuisine and Hocus Pocus 2
It was $118 for six rolls and two appetizers, and I envisioned eating sushi rolls while watching the release of Hocus Pocus 2. There were about eight separate pieces in each roll, for roughly 48 rolls.
I’m proud to admit we ate every piece, and it was maybe the most sushi rolls I’ve eaten in one sitting in my life. Usually, I eat less, but I ate the most this time.
Every tray served was loaded with wasabi and ginger, and the tray tops were clear plastic—allowing you to see the sushi roll inside.
MISO wrote the names of all rolls in marker on the top of the plastic trays, something I’ve always wished all sushi restaurants did for takeout, so I know what roll I’m eating at home.
A Presentation of Rolls at MISO Japanese Cuisine
Before we engorged ourselves on a hearty display of sushi rolls, we started with two appetizers: gyozas and spicy edamame.
Gyozas are a favorite of mine, and spicy edamame is a favorite of Barrett’s—I thought they were both delicious. The spicy edamame was hot but not too hot in flavor, and the gyozas were hearty and flavorful.
And now, I present to you the sushi rolls we ordered, in no order of importance.
Scooby Doo Roll (Miso Classic Sushi Roll)
What’s Inside/Outside: Unagi, shrimp tempura, crab salad, tobiko, onion and sauce wrapped in soybean paper
The Scooby Doo Roll was the most expensive roll we ordered at $16.50.
It was welcoming, meaty, and had as many flavors inside the roll as you’d find in a good sandwich. The soybean wrap added a rich finish and intriguing, fleshy texture.
16th Street Roll (Miso Classic Sushi Roll)
What’s Inside/Outside: Salmon, crab salad, ebi, shrimp tempura, avocado, tobiko, onion and sauce
Eating the 16th Street Roll is a beautiful experience.
The roll is creamy and sweet with the freshest fish and crab salad. The sauce is one of my favorites, topped additionally with onion.
California Maki (Traditional California Sushi Roll)
What’s Inside/Outside: Crab salad, avocado, cucumber, sesame seeds
The California Maki is your classic California Roll, with what I believe to be authentic crab salad. I keep saying it, but all MISO Japanese Cuisine rolls are incredibly fresh. Another creamy roll, and what you’d expect from an excellent California Roll.
A pet peeve with California Rolls is that they can be dry, and this roll is not dry. Moist and holds a great mouth feel.
Blossom Roll (House Special Sushi Roll)
What’s Inside/Outside: Tuna, crab salad, shrimp tempura, avocado, garlic creme, sriracha, unagi sauce, tempura flakes, Aonori flakes, micro cilantro
Taking a bite out of a Blossom Roll is like taking a stroll on a summer day.
Freshly tossed micro cilantro tops the Blossom Roll with the prettiest display of sriracha, unagi sauce, tempura and Aonori flakes. At the end of the flavor display, you’re hit with a pleasant zip of heat.
Wonder Roll (House Special Sushi Roll)
What’s Inside/Outside: Walu, shrimp tempura, crab salad, fried leeks, avocado, unagi sauce and garlic crème
The Wonder Roll is a rendezvous of flaky, white fish, and gives a vibe reminiscent of a grilled soup. With the onion flavor and leeks, this roll is unique and beautiful.
Sneaky Devil Roll (Miso Classic Sushi Roll)
What’s Inside/Outside: Shrimp tempura, spicy tuna, spicy crab salad, tuna, avocado, tobiko, onion, sauce and spicy sauce
Sauces are superb in the Sneaky Devil Roll, and finished this roll first. It’s quite delicious, and the mix of tuna and tempura to avocado and tobiko bring you on a journey through many classic sushi flavors.
Celebrating a 27th Birthday with MISO Japanese Cuisine
Like I say for all restaurants I newly find and love, I’ll be back soon, MISO Japanese Cuisine.
At the end of our spread of sushi, we ate chips and candy, and enjoyed the Hocus Pocus 2 movie. We found it cliché on the whole but enjoyed seeing the Sanderson Sisters united once again.
