Question: I don’t have much time, but I’d like to develop a presence on Twitter, Facebook and other social media sites. Should I get started and create profiles on each site for my business immediately?
Answer: Social media’s world continues to complicate and require additional time requirements — if you’re marketing correctly.
As for social, I usually recommend only establishing as many social accounts as you think you can adequately maintain. So, if you feel you have the time to invest in Twitter/Facebook along with staff, I would say go for it; otherwise, wait until you can put time into the effort. Twitter can be an easier way to maintain content instead of Facebook and give you a way to quickly retweet anything from other brands vs. having to come up with only organic content. For example, suppose you’re providing services and working with another company or brand. In that case, you can quickly retweet anything they’ve said – and add your additional comment from your business brand perspective.
All in all, don’t bite off more than you can chew. I would recommend having only one social media profile on one site, maintained beautifully, full of content, and with strategy included vs. having a dim presence on multiple social channels with sporadic content. A social channel that isn’t maintained can even be a detriment to a brand.
Quality over quantity.
