Between September and early December, the fall months in Maui are a bit more relaxed in general since there are fewer tourists.

During these months, you’ll get better pricing on travel and accommodations than any other time of the year. Luckily though, Maui is one of those places you can visit any time of the year to enjoy its rich terrain and sandy shores. And the fall season is no less; with days longer, summer-like and with hillsides turning a rich emerald green, Maui is undoubtedly an excellent choice during the fall season.

Splendid Temperatures in the Fall and Winter

The temperatures during fall and winter are considered by many to be the best time of year to visit, and it won’t keep you from enjoying all the activities that one usually does in Maui.

You may notice that the waterfalls situated in the eastern side of the island are more spectacular due to the occasional winter rains.

On Maui, even during a rainy period, you will find micro climates, and if it is raining in one part of the island, you can most likely find a clear and balmy place. This is due to the giant mountains that block the rains as it does so often in Lahaina or Wailea which are located on the western shores. The east side is generally wetter due to the direct trades that come ashore.

If you are planning a wedding, you’ll find that the flowers are always available during this season.

Look for the most economical travel and stay packages in September through early December.

During the fall, activities and attractions in Maui do not grind to a halt. Rather, it is far less crowded and much easier to arrange for group and family activities.

You can pack just as you would for any other beach vacation – bathing suits, flip flops, lightweight pants and breathable tees, shorts, sunscreen and sunglasses; and casual collared attire for the evenings. If you still find the main beaches crowded, you can always rent a vehicle and drive around the island to find your perfect beach paradise.

If you are considering surfing, the swells during the winter months bring you excellent surfing conditions, however caution is advised for the big waves, and only highly skilled surfers should attempt those waves. Not all beaches have life guards and their hours are only from 8 AM to 4:30 PM. You can check with the Maui Ocean Safety Officers (OSO) for conditions and advise. Local surfers are also a good source for up to date conditions.

Diving and snorkeling tours are quite popular activities, and some of the best snorkeling can be accessed from shore.

Tour boats offer snorkeling and diving to more remote locations, and during winter months, the whales are here. There are few sights as spectacular as a giant Humpback Whale breaching!

The ocean surrounding the island is warm for most of the year, however, it can become unsuitable for swimming and other activities during unstable weather. Again, check conditions with the Ocean Safety Officers, locals, or your tour organizers before you venture into the deep blue on your own.

We hope you enjoy your stay on Maui!
