Everyone who knows the North Shore of Oahu should also know Ted’s Bakery at Sunset Beach.

It’s a North Shore icon on Oahu.

You enter into a little square of a building, and order from large menu boards. Out of all of the shrimp trucks I’ve tried – this location would come in at my favorite place to enjoy the North Shore delicacy. You order, and then can wait outside in the covered eating area under the large blue tent. Don’t worry – your number will be called on a loudspeaker outside, so don’t feel like you have to wait and smoosh yourself inside like a sardine!

If you order a regular sized shrimp plate meal instead of a mini, you’ll also get a free slice of the Ted’s Bakery pie. These whipped, creamy pies are marvelous and not overly filling.

When outside, because they’ve had a lot of practice – the birds will come for you. Protect your delicious Ted’s Bakery food at all costs! Make sure to get food from here before it gets late.

Most all places on the North Shore close up around 8 pm – 9 pm, minus Foodland.

The surfing town of Haleiwa is charming.

After eating at Ted’s Bakery, you can drive down the Kamehameha Hwy to walk the streets of Haleiwa.

Not much parking in Haleiwa, but if you drive down to the public beach parking, that’s probably your best bet. From there, you can walk to the beach, or explore both sides of historic Haleiwa Town. I’m not much of a knick-knack shopper, but if you like knick-knacks and surfing, this is your town.

A highlight was walking out to the point and watching people surf – experts and beginners renting surfboards alike. Couldn’t believe how many people were surfing on paddleboards with foils, lifting them skyward! We started with paddleboarding, and the revisions of and various ways to surf continue.

Going to watch surfers? You MUST have a coffee in hand.
