The Pearl Harbor Memorial is both awe inspiring, sad, and filled with hope.

This was my second visit and I enjoyed every moment. You really find a deep respect for all people’s when you’re here – American, Japanese, allies, and fighters. You see how all things really aren’t in our control, and how so many people give of their lives during times of conflict to protect others. I hope this monument can continue to be a memorial forever, to those who passed, so we can remember what we preserve and protect into the future.

Apart from the USS Arizona Memorial, we also visited the USS Bowfin.

The USS Bowfin became the “Pearl Harbor Avenger” going into the waters to avenge the deaths of her brothers. The USS Bowfin memorial also came with a guided audio tour included in the price – and as you walk through, the little device picks up where you are in the submarine and gives you an overview of life on the vessel.

Stopping at the Aloha Stadium Swap Meet

Another stop I had to make since visiting ten years ago was the Aloha Stadium Swap meet!

Happening on Saturdays, you want to get there early to make sure the most vendors are open and available. We bought a coconut to sip on, a special Kona Coffee handmade bag, and a few other trinkets. Since we were celebrating our five-year anniversary we also had to purchase something wooden to celebrate. We chose one of those wooden puzzle boxes – a heart with two plumeria’s carved on front. We found the one we wanted almost immediately and then walked the rest of the stadium – not finding one we liked better. It was fate! Remember, most of this stuff isn’t authentic Hawaiian, and imported from other countries – so be sure to find a few local Hawaiian artisans to support while you’re there too.

There’s only a small entrance fee to enjoy the Aloha Stadium.

My favorite was when one of the crafty salesladies said the stamp at the bottom of her carved boxes were her family’s embossed symbol. I call bull – as I saw the same stamp throughout the meet. I guess “Made in Indonesia” is her family coat of arms.
