Built in 1910, the historic Thayer Building Apartments is a gorgeous structure that sits across from the California State Capitol Museum and Park right in the heart of Downtown Sacramento.
After our initial move to Sacramento, we chose to live in the Thayer Building Apartments, as we had noticed the building a few months previous when walking around the California State Capitol Park for an event site review.
Living in the Thayer Building for over a year was a great experience, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in Sacramento city.

Location, Location, Location
Surely the prime selling point of the historic Thayer Building is its location. You absolutely can’t find a better location than living right on N Street across from the California State Capitol.
From our apartment, we were able to walk within minutes to the waterfront, the Lavender Heights bar and clubbing district, to the nearby Golden 1 Center. It’s easy to experience food, nightlife, parades, events, farmer’s markets and more — enjoying the city’s excitement from the Thayer Buiding has been a highlight of life!
Parking at The Thayer Building Apartments
You can park on the street in designated zones by the city for residents with a pass, or you can pay a monthly fee to have an assigned space in the neighboring underground garage at Park Place Senior Living.
We paid the additional $200+ price to have an assigned parking space in the garage, giving us peace of mind having our car locked up at night and not having to compete for space on the street. It was worth it!
Living Space at The Thayer Building Apartments
We chose one of the larger units with secondary office space for $1,200 monthly and were in the far back of the building on the second floor, sharing an alley with the California Department of Veterans Affairs.
Living in the central part of any city, you must be prepared for city noise like garbage trucks, occasional sirens, etc., but otherwise, our corner location in the building kept us insulated from the noise of other neighbors almost entirely.
I loved the large bay window in the dining/office area, and the kitchen area in the apartment was larger than one would expect for a unit under 600 square feet.
Additional Information
We didn’t have any pets while living at the Thayer Building, but cats are allowed with a deposit. Shared, high-speed internet is also provided for free for all residents — another big plus working from home.
Ultimately, when living at the Thayer Building Apartments, you must accept the quirks that come with living in a building that’s over 100 years old, but in my opinion, the nostalgia and location made it 100% a good choice.
We have beloved memories of our time at the Thayer!
