Body language is everything.
The moment you step outside, or even within the confines of your own home, you communicate through body language primarily. Body language is how we understand the opposite sex, create a dazzling first impression, gain trust, ace job interviews, and exude confidence.
The Power of Body Language by Tonya Reiman is your practical guide to understanding all things body language to help you succeed in every business and social encounter.
Understanding Our Unconcious Social Cues & Body Language
Many lessons are taught in The Power of Body Language, with a few that jumped out at me.
- Five Immutable Truths of Body Language — There exist five truths related to body language that exists. The first is that body language is constant and not something that can be turned off, and the second is that body language appropriateness is always determined by context (e.g. location and culture). The third truth is that body language cannot be judged based on one single signal, and fourth, that body language helps us decipher between what people say and actually believe. Fifth, paying attention to body language helps us to tune in to “microexpressions” that show a person’s true inner feeling.
- Eye Contact for Confidence — Since people respond to eye contact so well (not the stalker stare), it’s best to use eye contact often and maybe even all the time. You will notice people responding more positively to you when you maintain eye contact in all your communicating, and people will find you more competent, astute and confident. Blink and look in the eye-nose triangle area to break up an intense stare into just one eye.
- Pupil Dilation — People’s eyes dilate when they’re excited or interested. They can also dilate when someone is lying or terrified. Increased blinking can also show someone is anxious or lying.
- Blushing — If you find yourself blushing when in difficult social situations or giving a presentation, remember to breath. This will bring down your overall heart rate and flushness.
- Body Language for Best First Impressions — For a best first impression it’s best to not touch your face (can show signs of dishonesty), firmly handshake, and maintain eye contact.
- Head Nodding — Head nodding is how humans affirm feelings of rapport and should be applied when listening to others. When we are nodding our heads, we are in agreement and accord. Similarly, head tilts show submissiveness and intent to listen but can often be used by people who are also trying to manipulate you.
The Power of Body Language will deliver if you’re looking to illuminate the facial cues, hand gestures, and body movements, helping you get everything you want from life and more.
